Jorgi’s Supermarket in Edmore will be permanently closing its doors by the end of January, 2019. Jorgi’s Director of Operations Brett Meilleur said that reaching the end of their lease, along with the state’s scheduled minimum wage hike, factored into their decision to shut down shop.
“Over the course of the last few years, we’ve had a sales decline at the store,” Meilleur said. “There’s also an uncertainty as to where minimum wage will go — we don’t know if it’ll be raised to $12 an hour by 2022 or 2030. It’s a hard decision to make, but we had to look at whether or not we could afford to take a risk on another five-year lease (on the building). Ultimately, we chose what we thought was the best decision.”
